Handwriting

“How do you know?” she asked.   She was waving the unopened card at me.

“Because I recognise the handwriting…”

It made no sense to the girl whose mother has so many different hands when put to paper (and only once did she write almost like the tooth fairy).

Still young, her writing changes with every passing year, so much that she doesn’t always recognise her own.

That someone could stand firm in their penmanship, and be known by it, over the journey of their life was unfathomable.

A working draft of an excerpt from an upcoming novel.

Image description : A blurred photograph of a corner of a piece of paper. A date is scribbled under half of the word 'reminder. The scribble looks like 'Fri Feb 16th'. The photograph has a filter that makes the paper look wrinkled.
